There are three failure modes for belts: cracking, delamination, and wear.
Under normal use, the ultimate failure mode of a belt is mainly cracking. However, under abnormal conditions, the belt will experience premature cracking, delamination, and wear.
The following is a table of belt failure levels and speculation on the causes of each failure.
Belt Cracking
【Cause of Failure】
● Pulley diameter is too small
● Ambient temperature is too high
● Tension is too high or too low
● Incorrect type selection
【Solutions】
● Increase pulley diameter
● Remove heat sources and improve ventilation
● Adjust to the appropriate tension
● Redesign and review, correct selection
Belt Delamination
【Cause of Failure】
● Tension is too high
● Pulley diameter is too small
● Insufficient transmission capacity
● Poor pulley alignment
【Solutions】
● Adjust to the appropriate tension
● Increase pulley diameter or redesign and review
● Improve type rating or redesign and review
● Adjust pulley alignment
Belt Wear
【Cause of Failure】
● Tension is too high or too low
● Roughness of pulley groove surface
● Pulley rust or wear
● Insufficient transmission capacity
【Solutions】
● Adjust to the appropriate tension
● Improve pulley surface roughness
● Remove rust from pulley or replace pulley
● Improve type rating or redesign and review
